Understanding Urgent Care Access in Fallbrook

Access to healthcare services continues to be an important priority for the Fallbrook Regional Health District. The District recognizes that residents would benefit from additional after-hours healthcare options, including 24-hour urgent care services.

Over the years, FRHD has explored opportunities to expand urgent care availability in our community. While a 24-hour urgent care center has not been established in Fallbrook, the District continues to evaluate options and seek partnerships that improve access to care.

Why Doesn't Fallbrook Have a 24-Hour Urgent Care Center?

A 24-hour urgent care model requires sufficient patient demand, healthcare staffing, and financial sustainability to operate around the clock. Based on previous evaluations and community healthcare needs, this model has not been sustainable in Fallbrook at this time.

FRHD's Efforts to Expand Urgent Care Access

Following the closure of the Fallbrook Hospital, the District began exploring healthcare services that could help address gaps in local access. In 2016, FRHD issued a Request for Proposals seeking healthcare providers interested in offering urgent care services with extended hours.

2016
  • FRHD issued a Request for Proposal for urgent care services.
  • Multiple providers submitted proposals for expanded urgent care options.
2017 - 2020
  • FRHD financially supported expanded urgent care services through a partnership with A+ Urgent Care (now Med+ Urgent Care).
  • During the subsidized period, utilization data showed limited use of extended evening and weekend hours.
Today
  • FRHD continues to monitor healthcare needs, explore opportunities, and connect residents with available healthcare resources.

Why Couldn't FRHD Continue Funding an Urgent Care Provider?

The Fallbrook Regional Health District is a public agency responsible for using public funds to support programs and services that benefit the community.

While FRHD was able to provide temporary financial support to help expand urgent care services, public agencies must follow state laws regarding the use of public funds. These laws require public expenditures to serve a public purpose and prevent agencies from providing ongoing financial support to private businesses.

Because of these requirements, FRHD could not continue financially supporting the ongoing operations of a private urgent care provider indefinitely.
